Civitella Marittima, capital of the Municipality of Civitella-Paganico, is a characteristic town that stands on a hill cloaked in cypresses and olive trees and from where the gaze can scrutinize distant horizons towards the Maremma plain and the Tyrrhenian coast. It was the seat of the Ardengheschi lordship who, in this area, left important remains of Romanesque architecture such as the Badia di San Lorenzo sul Lanzo, or Badia Ardenghesca.
The town passed under the Sienese dominion in the early 1300s together with Civitella-Paganico. This town is located where the Ombrone makes a large bend descending from the Sienese hills towards the Maremma plain. Civitella-Paganico in addition to being known for its kaolin quarries, it arouses greater interest in its artistic and monumental riches.
The regular layout of the town embellishes the village, due to the implementation of a well-drafted urban planning tool, the characteristic doors (Senese, Gorella, Grossetana), the brick houses with loggias dating back to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the residual perimeter walls and the church of San Michele Arcangelo. In the territory of Civitella-Paganico the ancient "Bagni di Petriolo" are still active, spas dating back to 1230 and the Basso Merse Nature Reserve is very attractive..
