To get to Argentario, cross the town of Orbetello and walk along the dam (one of the three strips of land that connect the promontory to the mainland) that separates the eastern lagoon from the western one. After the dam we will follow the signs on the left for Porto Ercole.
The small village reveals itself to our eyes as a characteristic port with ancient smells, with the nets resting on the characteristic goiters and with the faces of the fishermen marked by the wind and the sea. The ancient heart of Porto Ercole is located in the village at the southern end of the bay: this area is accessed through the Pisana gate (Via Ricasoli), from here a maze of alleys and the city walls branch off, embracing the entire town goes to rejoin the Rocca.
In Piazza Santa Barbara, from which you can admire a beautiful view of the port, we will also find the Governor's palace with a Renaissance-style facade. The oldest church, on the other hand, is located on the top of the town, of eighteenth-century origin, was partly rebuilt after the last war and inside the tombstones of the Spanish governors of the ancient State of the Presidi are preserved.
