The Abbey of San Galgano and the myth of the sword in the stone
The complex consisting of the Hermitage or Rotonda di Montesiepi and the ruins of the great Abbey of Circestense of San Galgano is one of the most evocative in Tuscany.
In the Rotonda di Montesiepi you can find the Spada di San Galgano embedded in the rock. Although it may seem strange, the Rotonda di Montesiepi is older than the great Abbey.
In fact the Rotonda di Montesiepi was built between 1182 and 1185, above the hut on the hill where San Galgano lived his last year of life, right where he had stuck his sword in the rock.
The Rotonda di Montesiepi was therefore the first Tomb of the Saint, who was buried north of the sword as if to see Chiusdino through the entrance door.
