The Casa Rossa Ximenes, symbol of the Diaccia Botrona
The Casa Rossa Ximenes, is a construction of the Jesuit engineer Leonardo Ximenes, commissioned by Leopoldo di Lorena in 1765 and foreseen in the reclamation plan of the swamp of Castiglione della Weir.
The property is located inside the Diaccia Botrona, and can be reached by walking along the bank of the Bruna river for two kilometers, after passing the Giorgini bridge. The internal and external environments are still present, characterized by technological structures such as: gates, bulkheads and various gears, still functioning, although not used.
The complex stands on a three-arched brick and travertine point, inside which housed the winches and the mechanisms of the cataracts, which were used to control the emission waters of the lake. The construction had the function of carrying out reclamation functions by filling, to be implemented through the hydraulic regulation of the winter flood waves, also granting control and water support in lean periods, aimed at guaranteeing fishing activities.
The Casa Rossa Ximenes today, an interactive museum for scientific dissemination
The Casa Rossa Ximenes is now home to the Interactive Museum created by Mizar, an agency for scientific dissemination and designed by the well-known physicist Paco Lanciano. The itinerary develops on two floors of the House-Museum and consists of: an original documentary on the Diaccia Botrona with a three-dimensional projection on the map relating to this area, which points out how the current environment has been obtained as a result of natural evolution and human interventions throughout history. In the second part of the itinerary, the visitor can do bird watching activities on the panoramic terrace.
