The WWF Natural Oasis of Orbetello
The Oasis of the Orbetello Lagoon, found its beginning in 1971, following the extraordinary discovery of a small nesting colony of black-winged stilts, by Fulco Pratesi and Hardy Reichelt few years ago. Amazement due to the presence of the species, which was already considered extinct in our country at the beginning of the last century.
The area occupied by the Oasis, including the Nature Reserve and the closed fund, has 1,000 hectares, and is incorporated into the largest regional Nature Reserve.
Environment, Fauna and Flora
Environment
Orbetello offers the charm that only wetlands can give. These, in fact, have always inspired painters, writers and poets, and frequenting them means entering into the deepest and most ancestral relationship we have with the natural environment. Breathing the air full of intense smells, observing the landscape with the grazing light and listening to the sounds that every day also capture the mind of those who live there, constantly marveling, you will be able to grasp and experience a sensation of strange well-being.
Fauna and Flora
Visiting the Oasis of the Orbetello Lagoon allows you to closely observe thousands of bird species, including herons, cranes, flamingos, waders, lapwings, ducks, geese, birds of prey and many passerines.
Among the coastal wetlands, Orbetello represents one of the most significant Italian lagoons, where you can have the opportunity to witness unforgettable scenes every day such as: the flights of disturbed colorful ducks from the presence of a marsh harrier, the silvery passages grazing on the swamp of the black-backed sandpipers, the pink and fuchsia flights of the flamingos, the bisyllabic song of lapwings but also groups of geese noisy that gather in the evening before sleeping in the most protected part of the lagoon.
It is also possible to observe the change in color of the reeds and of the water as the warm winter lights change, as the first romulee peep out, still low, on the cold and humid ground and how the glasswort colors the prairies red. In Orbetello it is also possible to observe a wonderful pair of osprey nesting on a specially built artificial tower and a colony of common terns, unique on the Tyrrhenian coast.
